g · gallery is proud to present a solo show by a Barcelona based artist Alessandra BB.
Through the series of expressive self portraits and surrealistic figurative pieces Alessandra explores the complicated topic of building relationships not only with other people, but with our own bodies that change unavoidably because of natural reasons like pregnancy or aging.
The human body becomes a focal point in this exploration. Alessandra believes that phycology works through the body only, so the deliberate physicality of her works becomes the symbol of the inner transformations, and physical touch serves as a metaphor for emotional intimacy.
In the oil paintings, collage works and textile artpieces, presented at all of the three halls of g · gallery, Alessandra BB explores the topic of the connections we build with other people. She examines how these relationships affect us - emotionally and physically. It is also an intimate journey of finding oneself through those connections.
“I always start with my inner relationship between myself and the world around. Then I turn to my family and friends. My works are always personal. I paint people I know really well, who’s energy I feel easily. I notice and reflect the transformations they go through during their lives”, - Alessandra explains.
Creating and keeping memories is an important concept of Alessandra BB’s artistic research. The memories that each relationship creates she cherishes and keeps in her artworks.
“There are clothes that we hide. They keep too many memories to get rid of them, it is too painful to wear it again though. It reminds us of the moments we will keep in our souls forever, but we need to learn to let them go”, - Alessandra says.
The memories of Alessandra BB’s pregnancies transformed into an impressive artwork “Being Spring”. Each character represents a certain period of gestation, showing different levels of interaction with the baby in the womb.
What makes this work extremely personal is the use of textile. The scraps of fabric, threads and embroidery that are carefully incorporated into the body of the artwork. All of those textiles are pieces of the clothes Alessandra was wearing during her pregnancies. She couldn’t wear them anymore. Those clothes felt useless. But Alessandra had an intention to keep them somehow, transforming them into an artpiece.
